Alphagan eye drops are suggested to cure the problem of open angel glaucoma and ocular hypertension. It’s a combination of Brimonidine and Timolol. As Brimonidine is an alpha-blocker drug and boosts the alpha receptors that carry blood to the Ciliary body. It also causes contraction of the blood vessels and cut down the formation of aqueous humour. It reduces the pressure in the eye and reduces the fluid inflow. Timolol is member of beta-blocker family and blocks the beta receptor and reduces the amount of fluid in the eyes and helps to reduce the pressure.

The suggested dosage of Alphagan eye drop is single drop twice a day. The way to use is

  • • Wash your hands properly before or after application.
  • • Tilt you head back, pull your lower eyelid downwards and squeeze the vial and put one drop in the eye.
  • • Close the eyes for next two minutes.
  • • Close the lid as soon as you used it to prevent contamination.
  • • Take you medicine on the scheduled time always. If you missed it take in as soon as you recall but if it’s the time for your next dose then skipped the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule.
  • • do not take it more than that of suggested dose but if you have taken it in extra amount and you feel uncomfortable seek medical help.
Side Effects

Some the effects of this eye drops that are unwanted and annoying are

  • • Sensation of burning eyes, stinging or itching of the eyes, conjunctivitis, dryness of the eyes, eye inflammation, irritation of the cornea, blurred vision or pain in head.
  • • Allergic reactions like selling of the eyes or eyelid, inflammation of the eyes, redness of the eyes, itching or irritation in the eyes.
  • • Some drugs are not safe to take along with the other drugs as they may interact with each other’s activity and interfere with them. Drugs that interact with the Alphagan are antidepressant drugs like Desipramine, Imipramine; MAO inhibitors like Phenelzine, Tranylcypromine; Beta-blockers like Atenolol, Metoprolol; Anti-hypertensive drugs like Methyldopa or Amlodipine; other drugs like Digitalis or Digoxin.
  • • Patients allergic to Timolol or Brimonidine should not install Alphagan eye drops.
  • • Lactating mothers and pregnant ladies are contraindicated for the use of Alphagan.
  • • Take away your contact lenses before smearing the eye drops.
  • • If the patient has a problem like Reynaud’s syndrome, thyroid problem, heart failure, stroke, asthma, lung disorder are recommended to take medical help before using this eye drop.
  • • Do not touch the tip of the eye drop or it may cause bacterial infection of the eyes.
  • • Do not drive or do any work that requires concentration as it may cause blurred vision.
